Your boiler thinks it sees a flame when there shouldn't be one, causing it to shut down for safety purposes.

Call an engineer soon

Book a Gas Safe engineer within 24 to 48 hours. Your boiler may be unsafe or could break down completely if left.

Technical description

Flame error – false flame or flame detected before burner started

What causes this fault?

This fault occurs when the boiler's internal sensor detects heat or electricity that looks like a flame before the gas has even been turned on. This is usually caused by a contaminated flame sensor sending a false signal or a moisture-damaged control board misinterpreting electrical interference as a burning flame.

This fault can be more frequent during periods of heavy rain or high humidity, as moisture ingress into the casing can cause the electrical short-circuits that trigger a false flame signal.

Engineer required

This is a high severity fault. Stop using the boiler and call a Gas Safe registered engineer. Do not attempt gas-related repairs yourself.
