Common problems guide

The most common Ideal Europa problems

The faults most likely to send a Ideal Europa into lockout — with plain-English causes, what to check first, estimated repair costs and whether you need a Gas Safe engineer.

This model is discontinued. Parts can be harder to source and expensive. If repair costs are mounting, a new A-rated boiler may be the smarter choice.

The 3 most common faults

01
RED lockout led High DIY-safe

Your boiler has failed to ignite and has locked itself out for safety, meaning you will not have any heating or hot water until it is reset.

Why it happens: This fault occurs when the boiler tries to light the burner but fails to detect a flame within its 10-second safety window. The most common reasons are a lack of gas reaching the unit, a worn-out ignition spark, or a component failure that prevents the internal parts from communicating correctly.

What to try first

Check if other gas appliances in your home (like a hob) are working to ensure gas is being supplied.Ensure your credit meter has sufficient balance if you have a prepay system.Turn the control knob to the 'Reset' position, wait five seconds, then turn it back to the 'On' position.

02
System pressure below 0.4 bar High DIY-safe

Your boiler has stopped working because the water pressure in the system has dropped too low.

Why it happens: This fault occurs when there isn't enough water circulating inside your heating system to safely operate the boiler. The most common reasons are a slow leak from a radiator valve or pipework, or air being released from the system through the radiators. Over time, this loss of water lowers the internal pressure until the boiler's safety sensors shut the unit down to prevent internal damage.

What to try first

Locate the filling loop (usually a silver flexible hose) under the boiler.Open the small valve taps until you hear water entering and the gauge reaches between 1.0 and 1.5 bar.Close both taps fully and restart the boiler.

03
FLAME FAILURE LED High Engineer

Your boiler has attempted to start but could not ignite the fuel, so it has shut down to keep your home safe.

Call a Gas Safe engineer if…

  • You can smell gas or see signs of a leak
  • The Ideal shows an Emergency or High severity code
  • The boiler keeps locking out after repeated resets
  • You've tried the DIY checks and the fault hasn't cleared
  • There's visible water leaking from the boiler
  • The flame is yellow or orange instead of blue
